How to Choose a Wedding Photographer Who Gets You

Okay, so you’re knee-deep in wedding planning, Pinterest boards, and about 87 open tabs (no judgment — we’ve all been there). Somewhere between cake flavors and seating charts, you realize: oh crap, we need a photographer.

But here’s the thing, you’re not just picking someone with a nice camera. You’re picking the person who’s going to third-wheel your wedding day, capture your grandparents’ happy tears, and somehow make you look cool while you’re ugly-crying during vows. Yes, we can do that ;)

So yeah… it’s kinda a big deal.

Find Someone Who Feels Like “Your People”

The best wedding photos don’t come from stiff poses or perfect lighting, they come from connection.
When you feel comfortable, you look like you. And that starts with finding a photographer who actually matches your energy.

Ask yourself:

  • Do they vibe with your sense of humor?

  • Do they get your kind of chaos?

  • Could you see yourself hanging out with them outside of wedding planning?

If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track.
If the answer is “ehh maybe,” keep looking. Because your photographer shouldn’t just be someone you tolerate, they should be someone who hypes you up, calms you down, and gets your inside jokes by the end of the night.

It’s Not Just About the Budget

Of course money matters, weddings are expensive (and somehow candles now cost $400??). But your photographer isn’t just a line item. They’re the person preserving every wild, emotional, once-in-a-lifetime moment.

When you’re choosing, think less about “who’s cheapest” and more about “who makes me feel something.”
Because at the end of the day, you won’t remember how much you saved — you’ll remember how it felt.

Although, snaps and claps to you for sticking to a budget and saving money on your wedding day!

My Approach (aka Why I Ask So Many Questions)

When I meet couples, I’m not just checking off a to-do list. I actually want to know your story. How you met. What makes you laugh. What kind of energy you want your day to have? Calm and cozy? Loud and chaotic? A little bit of both?

I love having that first call where we can just chat like humans. I’ll ask about your vibe, your venue, your favorite photos you’ve seen, and yes, I’ll probably tell you too much about my cats somewhere in there. No seriously, I will ask if you have pets and want to hear all about them.

Because when we finally get to your wedding day, I don’t want to feel like a stranger with a camera. I want to feel like part of your crew. That’s when the real magic happens.

Bottom Line

There’s no one-size-fits-all photographer (and honestly, thank goodness for that).
The right one for you is the person who gets your humor, your energy, your quirks and can capture the version of your day that feels the most you.

So trust your gut.
Ask questions.
And when you find the photographer who makes you laugh so hard you forget the camera’s there, BOOK THEM. That’s your person.
